How Net Metering Works

Net metering is a program that allows you to earn full-value credit for the extra solar energy your system sends to the grid. When your panels produce more electricity than your home is using, that surplus power goes back to the utility grid—and you receive a credit for every kilowatt-hour (kWh).

1:1 Credit: You get one credit for every 1 kWh exported—equal to the amount you’d pay your utility.

• Rolls Over: Unused credits roll forward for up to 12 months.

• Applies Automatically: Credits are used at night or during low-sun periods.

Most Ontario homes pay around 13–17¢ per kWh, so those credits can add up quickly. On average, customers save between $1,000–$1,500 per year depending on usage and system size.

That means lower hydro bills—and no need to invest in battery storage.
